Nick Reiner Won’t Face Death Penalty in Parents Rob & Michele Reiner’s Murder Case, Their Own Beliefs Reportedly Factored Into Decision

Nick Reiner will reportedly not face the death penalty in the case over the killings of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner.
The 33-year-old son of the late filmmaker and photographer is facing two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances after being accused of killing his parents inside their Los Angeles home in December 2025.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman and his team have now decided not to seek the death penalty in the case, according to a new report from TMZ.
Why won’t prosecutors seek the death penalty?
Sources with direct knowledge of the situation told the outlet that several factors reportedly went into the decision, including Rob and Michele‘s own views on the death penalty.
Both were reportedly opposed to the death penalty, and their beliefs played a significant role in prosecutors’ decision not to pursue it.
The impact that a potential death sentence would have on Nick‘s siblings, Jake Reiner and Romy Reiner, was reportedly another factor.
Jake previously said he hasn’t spoken to his brother Nick and it was reported the siblings decided not to fund his legal defense. However, prosecutors reportedly considered how difficult it would be for them if their brother faced a possible death sentence.
California Governor Gavin Newsom‘s 2019 decision to halt executions in the state also reportedly factored into the decision. California has not carried out an execution since 2006.
Despite the death penalty being taken off the table, Nick still faces the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.
He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, including allegations of multiple murders and lying in wait.
Nick was arrested after Rob and Michele were found fatally stabbed inside their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025.
The latest development comes just over a month after a grand jury indictment against Nick was unsealed, adding the “lying in wait” special circumstance to the case.
